Sportrack Aero 1300 is awesome! October 21, 2008 T. Wu (Norcal, CA) 14 out of 14 found this review helpful
Much better than expected. I've only had this on my Toyota 4runner for a few weeks. Does not feel very heavy, nor does it affect my fuel/mileage so far. Easy to assemble. Also very easy to take on and off any standard crossbar.
The picture is actually inaccurate. Go to the officieal Sportrack website and type in ABS 1300 Ski model A26395. Or just type in the model number. You will see the actual picture is a much longer box. The typical Yakima or Thule Box that is similar sized will usually cost you about $350 to $500, you can buy the exact same one for only $200 on Amazon, under a mistaken picture. I am surprised they are selling this box at this price. I think it might be the price of the picture, which is a smaller dimension roof cargo box. The smaller box would not have fit my snowboard/skis, but the one that was shipped (model A26365) for $200 fit my gear perfect.
75" is definitely the length of the box in case you were wondering if it would be too long for your vehicle. Also, when the Sportrack box came in through UPS, i saw a "thule" symbol on the box.. Could it be the same company? who knows.. but the quality is exactly the same. Good lock on the box too. Oh and the model that came is one that opens on the passenger side only (for sidewalk loading). This was quite a deal! highly recommended!!
Great so far March 31, 2010 Brad (Atlanta, GA USA) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Comes fully assembled except for the brackets that hold it to your cross bars. They are pretty simple to put in. I was a little afraid that it wouldn't fit the width of my factory cross bars on my Subaru Forester. They are a flat, "aero" design, but the brackets with this box fit them easily with room to spare. The bars would have to be REALLY wide to not fit. It is wide enough to use about 2/3 of the width of the bars on a Forester, and it fits about even with the top of the back window, with enough room for the hatch to open without touching, and about a foot behind the top of the front window. For less drag and better gas mileage, you are supposed to put it as far back as possible while allowing the rear door to open.
For those with thick bars, other reviews complained the included screws are not long enough. The screws are standard lag bolts with a square shoulder. A quick trip to the hardware store with one of them to get the same size/thread screw in a longer size would only take a few minutes and cost maybe $1 each for 8 of them. Not a really big deal. It might be nice for the manufacturer to include the ones they do for flat bars, and a set an inch longer or so for larger square or round bars, but it is simple enough to remedy.
It has a strap attached to the inside of the lid to make it easier to reach pull and closed, a nice touch I don't remember seeing in the product description.
I've bought a roll of self adhesive foam door weather stripping in an effort to better seal it off from the weather. The top and bottom simply overlap by at least an inch in such a way that wind wouldn't be likely to push any water up in there, but I'd like to try to make sure. I haven't used it in the rain yet, so I don't know how weatherproof it is without the weatherstrip I'm adding. I suppose I could put a sheet of plastic in the bottom of the box and load everything in there, then wrap the plastic over the top of everything before closing the lid. Any water that did get in would drain out around the screw holes. There are ridges in the bottom to keep all but soft bags out of any water that collected in the bottom.
I bought this primarily so when my family goes camping or on vacation in a dark sky location, we can take our big telescope with us. We have an Orion 8" Dobsonian (the mirror is 8", the tube is bigger than that and is almost 4 feet long, and there are projections for attaching to the base, focuser, finder, etc.), and the tube in Orion's padded carrying case will fit with room for a duffel bag and my eyepiece case. The base goes in the trunk in the space the duffel would have taken. The base is too big to fit in this box. Works well for this purpose.
Great rack! February 27, 2009 sports fan (MD, USA) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
this is a great rack. We recently moved so i needed to transfer boxes back and forth, i put heavy boxes into it and drove for 30 miles(probably not recommended) but without any problems. I kept it out in the rain/snow/ice for a week. We had extremely windy conditions while driving 70-80 miles/hr, i had no incidents and no leeks inside. And the best thing is i rarely noticed its effect on the gas consumption.
One thing though, i covered the metal plates needed to fix the rack to the roof with a plastic piece so it doesn't scrape against the car rack-bars.
Awesome Looking Carrier April 7, 2010 J. Nemeth (Abbotsford B.C. Canada) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I purchased this cargo box off Amazon and the shipping was FREE and very quick as well as the price was the lowest I could find out there. I live in Canada so when I picked it up near the border the shipping box was HUGE, but we just attached it to our roof. The carrier looks AWESOME, and come fully assembled!! I have yet to use it, but have a trip coming up. If you live in Canada you must buy it from Amazon. I saved over $150 including tax, currency and everything compared to if I bought it in Canada.
Great Ski Gear Storage January 18, 2009 Lori V. (Midwest) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This product is a great car top unit that is a fraction of the cost of the popular brands. The features are great, such as the one hand opening and the key lock that doesn't allow you to misplace your keys. I have been using it 3 times a week since it arrived and I cannot think of a negative comment for this carrier. It installed very easily as well!
